MY SON STRUCK ME THIRTY TIMES AT HIS BIRTHDAY DINNER—THE NEXT MORNING I SOLD THE MANSION HE CALLED HIS
I counted every blow.
One.
Two.
Three.
By the thirtieth, the taste of blood had replaced the last excuse I had made for my son.
His wife, Simone, sat in the dining room with a cold smile, and the guests stared at their plates. My son, Derek, believed his enormous Houston mansion made him untouchable. He forgot one detail: he had never owned it.
My name is Walter Mercer, and I am sixty-eight years old. I spent forty years building roads and commercial developments across Texas, then bought a River Oaks property through my company, Cypress Gate Holdings. I allowed my son, Derek, and his wife, Simone, to live there rent-free. I had called it their home, but I had never transferred the deed.
At Derek's thirtieth birthday dinner, I brought him a restored watch like the one his grandfather wore. He tossed it aside and mocked my old car, my clothes, and my place in his life. When I reminded him who had paid for the roof over his head, he pushed me and began hitting me. Nobody stopped him.
I walked out carrying the watch, too stunned to argue and too ashamed to call for help. But before sunrise, I understood that silence would only protect the wrong person.
At 8:06 the next morning, I called my attorney.
Chapter 1: The Morning After
The sun rose over Houston, casting a golden hue over the city. I sat in my small, modest apartment, the watch clutched tightly in my hand. The events of the previous night replayed in my mind, each blow more vivid than the last. My jaw still ached, and my pride was shattered.
But I was not broken.
I picked up the phone and dialed my attorney, Jack. The line rang once, twice, and then Jack's calm voice filled the silence.
"Walter, it's early. What's going on?"
"Jack, I need your help. I want to sell the mansion on River Oaks. Now."
Jack was silent for a moment. "Are you sure, Walter? That's a significant move."
"I'm sure," I replied, my voice firm. "Derek has crossed a line, and I won't stand for it any longer."
Jack understood. "I'll get the paperwork ready. What about the deed? It's still in your name, right?"
"Yes. I never transferred it."
Jack's voice grew more serious. "Good. This will make things smoother. I'll call you back in a few minutes with the details."
I hung up and took a deep breath. The watch in my hand felt like a symbol of all I had built and all I was about to reclaim.
Chapter 2: The First Move
At 8:23, I called the manager who handled Cypress Gate's properties. His name was Marcus, and he had been with the company for over a decade. I trusted him implicitly.
"Marcus, this is Walter Mercer. I need you to contact a serious buyer for the River Oaks property. I want it sold as quickly as possible."
Marcus's voice was steady. "Walter, I can do that. Do you want to list it on the market, or do you have someone in mind?"
"I have someone in mind. A developer from Dallas. He's been eyeing properties in Houston for a while now. I'll give you his contact information."
Within minutes, Marcus confirmed that the developer was interested and would be at the mansion by 9:10 AM.
I hung up and looked at the clock. 8:35. I had forty-five minutes to prepare myself for what was to come. I knew Derek would be furious, but I also knew that I was doing what was necessary to protect myself and my legacy.
At 9:05, my phone rang. It was Marcus.
"Walter, the developer is here. He's already looking over the property. Should I stay on the line?"
"Yes, Marcus. I need to know everything."
The call ended, and I waited. The silence was deafening.
Chapter 3: The Call
At 11:49, my phone rang. I knew who it was before I even looked at the screen. Derek.
What happened just seconds later left everyone in the room completely speechless… (Continue to Part 2 →)
