I explained my plan. "I want to stay here at the beach for a few days. If my family shows up, I'll let them know I'm taking care of myself too. Maybe they'll realize how much I do for them."
Alice nodded, her face softening with understanding. "That's a great idea. I'll help you. I can come over and stay with the kids if they show up. We'll make sure they're taken care of, and you can enjoy your time here."
With Alice's support, I felt more confident. I called my son and daughter, pretending to be out of town on a last-minute trip with friends. They were surprised but didn't question it. I could hear the excitement in their voices as they discussed their plans for the beach hotel.
As I hung up the phone, I felt a mix of relief and anticipation. For the first time in years, I wasn't dreading the holiday. I was looking forward to it, even if it meant doing things differently. I settled into my room, the sound of the waves lulling me to sleep, and I felt a sense of peace I hadn't experienced in a long time.
Chapter 3: The Unexpected Guests
The next morning, I woke up to the gentle sound of the ocean. I stepped out onto the balcony, sipping my coffee and watching the sunrise. It was a beautiful start to what promised to be a peaceful and rejuvenating few days. However, my peace was short-lived. My phone rang, and I saw it was my daughter.
"Mom, where are you?" she asked, her voice tinged with concern. "The kids are here, and they're asking for you. I thought you were at home."
I took a deep breath, trying to keep my voice calm. "I'm taking a little break, honey. I needed some time for myself. Alice is with the kids. They're fine, and she's making sure they have everything they need."
There was a moment of silence on the other end of the line. "Are you sure you're okay?" my daughter asked, her tone softening. "We can come pick you up if you want."
I smiled, feeling a glimmer of hope. "No, no, I'm really fine. I just needed this. Maybe you and the family can spend some time together without me, and we can all enjoy the holiday in a different way."
She hesitated for a moment. "Okay, Mom. But if you change your mind, just let us know. We love you."
After hanging up, I felt a weight lift off my shoulders. I spent the day at the beach, reading, swimming, and enjoying the simple pleasures of solitude. Alice called me later to update me on the kids. "They're having a blast," she said. "We're making cookies, watching movies, and they're loving the snow outside."
I felt a pang of guilt but reminded myself that this was for the best. My family needed to see that I wasn't just a caretaker, but a person with needs and desires of my own. As the day wore on, I received texts and calls from my children, checking in and expressing their love. Each one made me feel a little more seen and appreciated.
By the evening, I was feeling more relaxed and content than I had in years. I decided to take a walk along the beach, the soft sand beneath my feet and the cool air invigorating my spirit. As I walked, I realized that this break was exactly what I needed to recharge and find a new balance in my life.
Chapter 4: A Change of Heart
On Christmas Eve, I received a video call from my son. He looked a bit flustered but smiled warmly. "Mom, the kids are asking for you. They miss you so much. We miss you too. Can you come home for Christmas Day?"
The truth was finally coming out — and there was no turning back now… (Continue to Part 3 →)
