The Unanswered Calls

The following morning, my phone began ringing relentlessly. Seventeen times in two hours. Every single call was from my father. I ignored them all. I sat at my kitchen table, staring out the window at the gray winter sky, replaying the previous night’s events in my mind. The humiliation, the betrayal, the sheer coldness of my father’s actions. I felt numb, hollowed out. I’d built a successful software company from the ground up, a company my father had repeatedly dismissed as a hobby. Now, he was taking away the financial security that allowed me to pursue my passion.

Finally, I answered. “What do you want, Dad?” I asked, my voice flat. There was a long pause on the other end. “Brooke, please. I… I made a mistake,” he stammered, his voice uncharacteristically shaky. “I didn’t mean for it to come across like that.” “Like what?” I pressed. “Like you were deliberately trying to destroy my life?”

“That’s not what I meant! I was just trying to… motivate you. To show you the value of family.” “Motivate me by stripping me of my inheritance on Christmas Day?” I scoffed. “That’s a novel approach to family bonding.” He sighed heavily. “Look, the money… it’s not the point. It’s about loyalty. About continuing the Whitmore legacy.” “The Whitmore legacy? You mean your legacy? Your need to control everything?”

“I just want you to come back, Brooke,” he pleaded. “Come back to Whitmore Industrial. You have a brilliant mind. You could be a real asset.” “I have a brilliant mind, Dad, and I’m using it to build something of my own. Something that doesn’t require me to sacrifice my happiness for your approval.” The line went silent again. I could hear him breathing heavily on the other end.

“I… I don’t understand you,” he finally said, his voice laced with frustration. “I’ve given you everything. Everything!” “You’ve given me conditional love, Dad. And a lot of expectations. But you’ve never actually *seen* me.” I hung up the phone, feeling a strange mix of anger and sadness. I knew this wasn’t about the money. It was about something much deeper, something that had been festering between us for years. The call felt desperate, uncharacteristic, and...wrong.

Later that day, Landon arrived at my door, uninvited. He looked uncomfortable, shifting his weight from foot to foot. "Look, I...I feel bad about last night," he mumbled, avoiding eye contact. "Dad really went too far." I raised an eyebrow. "Oh, now you feel bad? After egging him on all evening?" He shrugged. "I just...I wanted to make sure I got my share. It's a lot of money, Brooke."

“You’re just like him,” I said, my voice cold. “Obsessed with money and power.” He flinched. “That’s not fair.” “Isn’t it? You’ve always been his golden boy, haven’t you? Willing to do whatever it takes to please him.” He opened his mouth to protest, but I cut him off. “Just go, Landon. I don’t want to see you right now.” He hesitated for a moment, then turned and walked away, leaving me alone with my anger and my grief.

That evening, another call came through from Dad, but this time it wasn’t a plea. It was a frantic, breathless message. “Brooke, you need to come home. Now. Something’s happened with the trust… something terrible. Your grandfather… he changed the original document just before he died.” He paused, his voice cracking. “Landon knew. He’s been lying to both of us.”

Before anyone could utter another word, the heavy oak door swung open—and what was revealed next left the entire room dead silent.
