I Held My Grandson’s Shivering Hand While My Blood‑Stained Legacy Threatened to Destroy Us All

I Held My Grandson’s Shivering Hand While My Blood‑Stained Legacy Threatened to Destroy Us All
← Previous Part (1) Reading Part 2 of 2

I snatched the diary, its pages trembling under my fingers, the ink pooling like fresh blood.

“Look—Don’s betrayal,” Tony rasped, pointing to a photograph of my father, his eyes hollow, a gun pressed to his temple.

My heart hammered; the truth of Luca’s lineage pressed against my throat, a bitter revelation choking me.

Before we could turn another page, the metallic clang of boots thundered down the stairs.

Don’s men stormed in, rifles gleaming, faces obscured by night‑marred scarves.

“Drop it!” the lead man barked, voice a cold blade.

In a flash, a gun cracked; a deafening crack split the basement.

Bullet tore through Tony’s shoulder, his body convulsing as he collapsed onto the dust‑covered floor.

He sank into unconsciousness, his eyes rolling, the diary slipping from his grasp.

Above us, the warehouse shuddered, the hidden basement beginning to collapse, stone and timber grinding toward us as the explosive debris threatened to bury us all.

Confrontation in the Dark

My breath hitched as I slipped the diary from the safe onto the cracked concrete.

“Don, you think you can hide the truth in ink?” I snarled, the pages fluttering like wounded birds.

His silhouette loomed, a jagged silhouette against the dying glow of the broken bulb.

“You always liked drama, Marco,” he rasped, eyes glittering with a cold amusement.

I slammed the diary shut, the leather thud echoing louder than the wind outside.

“Read it. Tell me why the boy in the blanket isn’t mine.”

His grin widened, a scarred crescent that seemed to swallow any remaining light.

“Luca… is not your flesh, boy.” He lifted a trembling hand, his fingers trembling like mine once did.

“He is the last heir of the Barone clan. A name you thought dead for thirty years.”

My mind recoiled, images of blood‑stained wars flashing behind my eyes.

“Your father… he made a pact with theirs, a truce sealed in blood. When the pact broke, the Barone heir was hidden.”

“You placed him with me to see if I’d betray my own blood, to test my loyalty to the Salvatore throne.”

The words struck like a pistol shot; the room seemed to shrink, the winter air pressing against my skin.

I stared at the diary, at the half‑written confession, at the child’s frozen fingers clutching the blanket.

“You used my love for a child as a weapon,” I whispered, voice cracking like the old floorboards.

Don’s chuckle was a low growl. “Love? No, Marco. It was strategy. The Barone line ends with Luca, and with you.”

My heart hammered, a frantic drum demanding revenge, forgiveness, or both.

“If this is a test… I’m done being your pawn.”

He tilted his head, the faint light catching a glint of metal at his belt.

“Then you’ll see what happens when a pawn decides to become a king.”

Explosion and the Choice

The warehouse shuddered as a deafening boom tore through the darkness.

Dust erupted, a choking white cloud that swallowed the lingering scent of pine sap.

Crates toppled, timber splintered, and the hidden basement collapsed, sending a cascade of shattered stone toward us.

I felt the ground tilt, my knees buckling as the world fell apart around my feet.

Don staggered, coughing, his eyes wild with a mixture of rage and sudden fear.

“Marco!” he shouted, voice raw, as a beam crashed beside him.

Through the haze, a glint caught my eye—a pistol half‑buried in debris, its grip engraved with my father’s initials, “V.”

My hand twitched, the cold metal searing my palm, the same burn I felt before when I first held a gun.

I lifted the weapon, the weight familiar, the weight of legacy.

Blood throbbed behind my eyes, the diary’s truth still a raw wound.

“You wanted me to kill my own son,” I hissed, the words barely audible over the crumbling ceiling.

Don’s face twisted, a mask of disbelief and fury. “You… you would—”

Lightning flashed through the shattered windows, illuminating the ruin in stark, white light.

In that instant, the world narrowed to two choices: fire the pistol and end the bloodline that had haunted us, or lower it and let the broken legacy consume us both.

The echo of the explosion faded, leaving only the ragged breathing of the wounded, the distant wail of sirens, and the cold, hard steel pressing against my palm.
