I Never Thought a Night at the Pool Would Turn Into a Fight for My Sister’s Life

I Never Thought a Night at the Pool Would Turn Into a Fight for My Sister’s Life

All light vanished in an instant; the room was swallowed by a suffocating black.

“What the—?” Elena whispered, her eyes wide, the water’s surface shimmering with an unseen ripple.

From beneath the blackness rose a low, guttural groan, reverberating off the concrete walls, a sound older than any scream.

My heart slammed against my ribs, cold as the water that still clung to my skin.

“Someone’s down there,” I breathed, the words barely a whisper against the oppressive silence.

Even the paramedics froze, their faces pale, as the groan deepened, vibrating the floor beneath our shoes.

“Don’t move,” I warned Elena, gripping the edge of the ladder, the metal slick with slime.

In that moment, time stretched, each second a hammer strike on my nerves.

Shadows Return

The lights snapped back on with a harsh, buzzing flicker, blinding us for a heartbeat.

Water droplets glittered like shards of glass as the fluorescents washed the pool in sterile white.

My eyes darted to the rusted ladder, where a dark shape clung, shaking with the aftershocks of the surge.

It was a figure, gaunt and pale, its skin slicked in pool water, eyes glinting with a desperate, familiar fire.

“Carlos?” I gasped, the name tearing through my throat.

He was there, just as my mother’s old portrait described—scarred cheek, a jagged scar across his brow, the same haunted look.

Elena’s scream caught in her throat, frozen by the sight.

“Maya, it’s—” the paramedic began, but his words died as Carlos’s mouth opened, a ragged, blood‑stained whisper spilling out.

“The pact… the heirloom…” he croaked, eyes flickering between madness and recognition.

My breath hitched, the water’s chill racing up my spine.

When the lights returned, Maya discovers the submerged figure is her long‑missing brother Carlos, alive but driven mad by the same curse.

Carlos' Confession

“Maya… you have to listen,” he whispered, blood staining his shirt, the taste of copper on his tongue.

His eyes were lit by the harsh fluorescence, haunted by a scar that cut across his cheek like a roadmap of pain.

I knelt beside him, the cold tiles seeping into my bones, feeling the tremor in his hands as he clutched his own neck.

“It’s the necklace,” he croaked, pointing a trembling finger at the silver chain tangled around Lily’s wrist.

“Our mother found it in the attic when we were kids. She called it a blessing, but she never told us the true story.”

His breath hitched, a low rasp that seemed to echo off the tiled walls.

“Our family made a pact with the water spirit that lives here,” he said, eyes darting to the dark surface, “to keep us safe, to give us… something.”

He tried to smile, a cracked grin that didn’t reach the hollow in his gaze.

“Every generation, the heirloom must be offered. If it’s kept, the spirit binds us, drags us back when the night is right.”

My mind raced, remembering the old photograph of my grandmother holding the same necklace, the way she’d whisper prayer‑like words before every summer.

“So the… ladder, the flickering lights, the cold hand that pulled Lily down— it was all part of the same curse?”
