“After the pool, come up to my room.” I froze. “Why?” Richard glanced around, his eyes darting nervously. “I can’t explain it here.” “What is going on?” He only repeated: “Seven o’clock. Room 214.” Then he walked away, leaving me staring after him, the cheerful chatter around the pool suddenly muted. The sun felt cold on my skin. I hadn’t seen him act like this before. Not ever. Richard had always been…safe. A comforting presence after Dad died, a steady hand offering support. Now, this.
The request felt heavy, coated in a strange, unsettling expectation. I picked at my salad, the lettuce suddenly tasteless. He’d been different since the funeral, more attentive, asking persistent questions about Mom’s things, Dad’s past. I’d dismissed it as grief, his way of trying to connect with the memories we both shared. But this…this was something else entirely. I glanced at my watch. It was barely three o’clock. Four hours until seven. Four hours to decide what to do. A wave of nausea washed over me. I needed to get out of here. I needed to call someone. But who? And what would I even say?
A Shadow of Suspicion
I excused myself, claiming a headache, and hurried back to the car. Richard didn't seem to notice, already engrossed in a phone call. I drove aimlessly for an hour, the highway blurring into a stream of green and grey. I called my best friend, Sarah, but couldn't bring myself to tell her the whole story. “He just…said something weird,” I mumbled, downplaying the incident. “He invited me to his room later. It felt…off.” Sarah, ever practical, suggested I simply avoid him. “Just say you’re tired, Emily. You don’t owe him an explanation.” It sounded so easy. But I knew Richard wouldn’t let it go.
He was persistent, subtly manipulative. I remembered him always steering conversations, subtly guiding decisions. Back at the hotel, I found Richard waiting by the elevators. “Feeling better?” he asked, his voice too smooth. “I was worried.” I forced a smile. “Much. I think I just needed some fresh air.” He paused, his gaze lingering on my face. “Good. Because I have something I want to show you. It’s about your father.”
“About Dad?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper. Richard nodded, his expression unreadable. “He kept a lot of secrets, Emily. Things he never told anyone. I think it’s time you knew.” He led me down a long, dimly lit hallway towards room 214. My heart hammered against my ribs. Each step felt like walking towards an abyss.
The room itself was surprisingly opulent, decorated in dark wood and heavy fabrics. A half-empty bottle of whiskey and two glasses sat on a small table. “Sit down,” Richard said, gesturing to a plush armchair. He disappeared into the bathroom, returning with a small, antique wooden box. He carefully opened it, revealing a collection of old photographs and letters. “These were hidden in your father’s study,” he explained, his voice low. “I found them after he passed.” The photos were faded and grainy, depicting a younger version of my father with a woman I’d never seen before. The letters were even more shocking, filled with passionate declarations of love and veiled references to a life he’d kept hidden.
The Weight of Secrets
As I read the letters, a chilling realization began to dawn. My father had been living a double life. The man I thought I knew, the quiet, devoted husband and father, had a past filled with deception and hidden desires. Richard watched me intently, his face a mask of grim satisfaction. “He never told your mother, of course,” he said. “He was a master of keeping secrets.” I felt a wave of anger wash over me, directed at my father, at Richard, at the entire situation. “Why are you showing me this?” I demanded, my voice trembling. “What does this have to do with anything?” Richard leaned closer, his eyes locking onto mine.
“It has everything to do with everything, Emily. Your father wasn’t the man you thought he was. And neither am I.” He paused, a sinister smile playing on his lips. “There’s a family legacy here, Emily. A pattern of…discretion. And it’s your responsibility to uphold it.” He then revealed a document, a deed to a property I'd never heard of, a substantial piece of land nestled in the mountains. “Your father left this to you, in trust. But there are…conditions.”
What happened just seconds later left everyone in the room completely speechless… (Continue to Part 2 →)
