Sloppy Joes have a storied history that traces back to the early 20th century in the United States. Often described as a loose meat sandwich, this dish is typically made by combining ground beef with a tangy tomato-based sauce and serving it on a soft bun. While the exact origins of Sloppy Joes are somewhat murky, many food historians suggest that the sandwich was named after a bar in Key West, Florida, where a chef named Joe created the dish to entice customers.

Ingredients

1 pound ground beef

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 small onion, diced

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 red bell pepper, diced

1 cup ketchup

2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

1 tablespoon Dijon mustard

1 tablespoon brown sugar

1 teaspoon smoked paprika

Salt and pepper to taste

4 slices of thick Texas toast

1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

Cook the Meat: In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion, garlic, and red bell pepper; sauté until the vegetables are tender, about 5 minutes.

Brown the Beef: Add the ground beef to the skillet. Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spatula, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat if necessary.

Make the Sauce: Stir in the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, brown sugar, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Mix well and let it simmer for about 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.

Prepare the Toast: While the meat mixture simmers, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Place the Texas toast slices on a baking sheet. Bake for 5 minutes on each side until golden and crispy.

Assemble the Sloppy Joes: Once the toast is crispy and the meat mixture is thickened, spoon a generous amount of the sloppy mixture onto each slice of Texas toast.

Add Cheese: Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the top of the sloppy mixture on each toast. Return to the oven and bake for another 5 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Serve: Remove from the oven, garnish with fresh parsley, and serve immediately while hot.
