Ingredients

For the Caramelized Onions:

2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced

2 tablespoons unsalted butter

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 teaspoon sugar

Salt, to taste

For the Burgers:

1.5 pounds ground beef (80/20 blend for juiciness)

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

Salt and pepper, to taste

4 slices Swiss cheese

4 hamburger buns

Lettuce, tomato, and pickles for toppings

Optional: Dijon mustard or your favorite burger sauce

Instructions

Caramelize the Onions:

    - In a large skillet, melt the butter and olive oil over medium heat.

      - Add the sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Stir to coat the onions in the oils.

        - Cook the onions slowly, stirring occasionally, until they are soft and golden brown (about 20-25 minutes).

          - Add sugar in the last 5 minutes to enhance sweetness and caramelization. Set aside.

            Prepare the Burger Patties:

              - In a large bowl, mix the ground beef with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Be careful not to overwork the meat.

                - Divide the mixture into 8 equal portions. Form each portion into a thin patty.

                  - Place a slice of Swiss cheese in the center of 4 of the patties, then top with a spoonful of caramelized onions. Place another patty on top of each, sealing the edges tightly to encase the cheese and onions.

                    Cook the Burgers:

                      - Preheat your grill or skillet over medium-high heat.

                        - Cook the burgers for about 5-6 minutes on one side. Flip and continue cooking for another 4-5 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 160°F (medium).

                          - If desired, place an additional slice of Swiss cheese on each burger in the last minute of cooking to melt.

                            Assemble the Burgers:

                              - Toast the hamburger buns lightly on the grill or in a toaster.

                                - Spread Dijon mustard or your preferred sauce on the bottom bun, add lettuce, and place the stuffed burger on top.

                                  - Top with fresh tomato slices, pickles, and the top bun.

                                    Serve and Enjoy:

                                      - Serve your caramelized onion and Swiss stuffed burgers hot with your favorite sides, like fries or a fresh salad.
