Ingredients

12 oz ziti pasta

2 tbsp olive oil

1 medium onion, diced

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 lb ground beef or Italian sausage

1 (28 oz) can crushed tomatoes

2 tsp dried oregano

1 tsp dried basil

½ tsp red pepper flakes (optional)

Salt and pepper, to taste

2 cups ricotta cheese

1 egg

3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided

1 cup grated Parmesan cheese, divided

2 cups garlic bread crumbs (see note)

Fresh basil for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Cook Pasta: In a large pot of salted boiling water, cook the ziti according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Prepare the Sauce: In a large skillet over medium heat, add the olive oil. Once hot, add the diced onion and cook for about 5 minutes, until translucent. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant. Add the ground meat and cook until browned, breaking it up with a spoon.

Combine Ingredients: To the meat mixture, add the crushed tomatoes, oregano, basil, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper. Simmer for about 10-15 minutes until slightly thickened.

Mix Cheese: In a separate bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, egg, 1 cup of mozzarella cheese, and ½ cup of Parmesan cheese. Mix until well blended.

Combine Pasta & Sauce: In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked ziti with the sauce until well coated.

Layer Ingredients: In a greased 9x13 inch baking dish, add half of the ziti and meat mixture. Spread half of the ricotta mixture on top, then sprinkle with 1 cup of the remaining mozzarella cheese. Pour the rest of the ziti mixture on top and finish with the remaining ricotta mixture and the rest of the mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.

Add Garlic Bread Topping: In a small bowl, mix the garlic bread crumbs with a little olive oil. Sprinkle evenly over the top of the baked ziti for a crunchy finish.

Bake: Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until golden and bubbly.

Garnish & Serve: Let cool for a few minutes, then garnish with fresh basil if desired. Serve warm and enjoy your next-level cheesy baked ziti!
