Ingredients

1 ½ cups all-purpose flour

½ teaspoon baking soda

¼ teaspoon baking powder

½ teaspoon salt

½ cup unsalted butter, softened

¾ cup granulated sugar

1 large egg

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Zest of 1 orange

½ cup fresh orange juice (about 1 orange)

½ teaspoon orange extract (optional)

1 cup powdered sugar (for icing)

1-2 tablespoons additional orange juice (for icing)

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Whisk together dry ingredients: In a medium bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.

Cream the butter and sugar: In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar together using an electric mixer on medium speed until the mixture is light and fluffy (about 3 minutes).

Add egg and flavorings: Incorporate the egg, vanilla extract, orange zest, orange juice, and orange extract (if using) into the butter mixture. Mix until well combined.

Combine with dry ingredients: Gradually add the dry ingredient mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to over-mix; the dough should be slightly sticky.

Scoop the dough: Using a tablespoon or a cookie scoop, drop heaping tablespoons of dough onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.

Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the cookies are set and lightly golden on the edges. Remove from the oven and allow them to cool on the baking sheet for about 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Prepare the icing: In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar and 1-2 tablespoons of orange juice until smooth. Adjust the consistency as needed — it should be thick yet pourable.

Ice the cookies: Once the cookies have cooled completely, drizzle the orange glaze over the cookies using a spoon or a piping bag for a more decorative touch.

Serve and enjoy: Allow the icing to set for a few minutes, then serve your Creamsicle Orange Cookies with a glass of milk or share them with friends and family!
