Ingredients

2 large red onions

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 cup breadcrumbs (preferably panko for extra crunch)

2 large eggs

1 cup buttermilk (can substitute with regular milk mixed with 1 tsp vinegar)

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

1 teaspoon smoked paprika

Salt and black pepper, to taste

Cooking spray or olive oil, for spraying

Instructions

Prepare the Onions: Peel the onions and slice them into 1/4-inch thick rings. Separate the rings and place them in a bowl.

Make the Batter: In a medium bowl, combine the buttermilk, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Mix well to combine.

Coat the Rings: In another bowl, place the flour. In a separate bowl, beat the eggs. Start by dipping each onion ring into the flour, shaking off any excess. Then, dip it into the buttermilk mixture, letting the excess drip off before finally coating it with breadcrumbs. Set aside on a plate.

Preheat Air Fryer: Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for about 5 minutes.

Air Fry the Onion Rings: Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray or brush it with olive oil. Arrange the coated onion rings in a single layer, making sure they are not touching each other. Spray the tops lightly with cooking spray for extra crunch.

Cooking Time: Air fry the onion rings for about 10-12 minutes, flipping halfway through, or until golden brown and crispy. Check for desired crispiness.

Serve: Once done, remove from the air fryer and let them cool for a minute. Serve with your favorite dipping sauce, like ranch, ketchup, or spicy aioli. Enjoy your crispy onion puffs!
