The origins of Stromboli date back to the early 1950s in the United States, although its roots can be traced to Italian cuisine. Named after the volcanic island of Stromboli off the coast of Sicily, this dish reflects the Italian tradition of using fresh, high-quality ingredients to create satisfying meals. While the exact origins are a bit murky, many culinary historians agree that Stromboli emerged from the Italian immigrant communities in Philadelphia, where they began to experiment with rolled pizza dough, transforming traditional pizza into a portable and easy-to-eat dish.

Ingredients

1 lb pizza dough (store-bought or homemade)

1 cup marinara sauce (divided)

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

1 cup sliced pepperonis

1/2 cup cooked Italian sausage, crumbled

1/2 cup sliced bell peppers (any color)

1/2 cup sliced black olives

1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

1 tsp Italian seasoning

1 egg (beaten, for egg wash)

Olive oil (for drizzling)

Fresh basil leaves (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Prepare the Dough: On a floured surface, roll out the pizza dough into a rectangle approximately 14x10 inches thick, about 1/4 inch.

Spread the Sauce: Evenly spread about 1/2 cup of marinara sauce on the dough, leaving a border around the edges.

Layer the Fillings: Next, sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese over the sauce. Then, layer the pepperonis, cooked sausage, bell peppers, and black olives on top of the cheese. Sprinkle the grated Parmesan and Italian seasoning over the filling.

Roll the Stromboli: Starting from one long edge, carefully roll the dough into a tight log, pinching the ends to seal. Place the seam side down on the prepared baking sheet.

Egg Wash: Brush the surface of the stromboli with the beaten egg. This will give it a beautiful golden color as it bakes. With a sharp knife, make a few diagonal slashes on top of the stromboli for steam to escape.

Bake: Drizzle a little olive oil on top for extra flavor and crunch. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown.

Cool and Slice: Once baked, remove the stromboli from the oven and let it cool for about 5-10 minutes. Slice it into portions and serve with the remaining marinara sauce for dipping.

Garnish: If desired, garnish with fresh basil leaves before serving. Enjoy your deliciously easy stromboli!
