Ingredients

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 medium onion, finely chopped

4 cloves garlic, minced

1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes

1 teaspoon sugar (optional)

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon basil (or 1 tablespoon fresh basil, chopped)

Salt and pepper to taste

A pinch of red pepper flakes (optional)

Fresh basil leaves (for garnish)

Instructions

Sauté Aromatics: In a medium saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until it becomes translucent, about 5 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another 1-2 minutes, until fragrant.

Add Tomatoes: Pour in the crushed tomatoes and stir well to combine. If you prefer a slightly sweeter sauce, add the sugar at this point.

Season: Sprinkle in the dried oregano, dried basil, red pepper flakes (if using), and season with salt and pepper to taste. Stir everything together.

Simmer: Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer uncovered for about 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally. This will help thicken the sauce and meld the flavors together.

Finish and Serve: Taste the marinara sauce and adjust seasoning if necessary. If using fresh basil, stir it in just before serving. Garnish with additional fresh basil leaves if desired.

Enjoy: Serve the marinara sauce over pasta, as a pizza sauce, or with your favorite Italian dishes!
