Ingredients

1 lb ground beef (or turkey for a lighter option)

1 small onion, finely chopped

1 small green bell pepper, chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 cup ketchup

2 tablespoons brown sugar

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1 tablespoon mustard (yellow or Dijon)

1 teaspoon smoked paprika

Salt and pepper to taste

4 hamburger buns

Optional toppings: pickles, sliced jalapeños, shredded cheese

Instructions

Cook the Meat: In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef. Cook until browned, breaking it up with a spatula (about 5-7 minutes). Drain excess fat if necessary.

Add Veggies: Add the chopped onion, bell pepper, and minced garlic to the skillet. Sauté for an additional 3-4 minutes until the vegetables are softened.

Make the Sauce: Stir in the ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Mix well and bring the mixture to a simmer.

Simmer: Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for about 10 minutes. This allows the flavors to meld together. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.

Assemble Sloppy Joes: Toast the hamburger buns if desired. Spoon the sloppy joe mixture generously onto the bottom halves of the buns. Add any optional toppings you like.

Serve: Cap with the top halves of the buns and serve immediately. Enjoy your homemade sloppy joes with a side of chips or a crisp salad!
