Ingredients

For the crust:

1 cup graham cracker crumbs

1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1/3 cup granulated sugar

1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted

1/4 teaspoon salt

For the peanut butter layer:

3/4 cup creamy peanut butter

1/4 cup powdered sugar

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/8 teaspoon salt

For the chocolate topping:

1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

2 tablespoons unsalted butter

1/4 cup heavy cream

Sea salt, for sprinkling (optional)

Instructions

Prepare the crust: In a medium bowl, combine the graham cracker crumbs, cocoa powder, granulated sugar, melted butter, and salt. Mix until the ingredients are well combined and resemble wet sand.

Form the crust: Press the crumb mixture evenly into the bottom of a greased 8x8 inch baking pan. Use a spatula or the bottom of a glass to pack it down firmly. Set aside.

Make the peanut butter layer: In a separate bowl, mix together the creamy peanut butter, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and salt until smooth and well incorporated. Spread the mixture evenly over the cooled crust, smoothing it out with a spatula.

Prepare the chocolate topping: In a small saucepan over low heat, combine the semi-sweet chocolate chips, butter, and heavy cream. Stir continuously until melted and smooth. Alternatively, you can melt the mixture in a microwave-safe bowl in 30-second intervals, stirring in between until smooth.

Assemble the squares: Pour the melted chocolate mixture over the peanut butter layer, using a spatula to spread it evenly. If desired, sprinkle a pinch of sea salt on top for an added flavor dimension.

Chill: Place the baking pan in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours, or until the chocolate topping is firm and the layers have set.

Serve: Once set, remove from the refrigerator and cut into squares. Enjoy your gooey chocolate peanut butter squares chilled or at room temperature!
