Ingredients

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 cup granulated sugar

2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder

2 teaspoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup milk

1/4 cup vegetable oil

1 tablespoon vanilla extract

1 cup brown sugar, packed

1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (for the fudge layer)

2 cups hot water

Whipped cream or vanilla ice cream (optional, for serving)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x9-inch baking dish or deep casserole dish.

Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt until well combined.

Add Wet Ingredients: Pour in the milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. Stir until everything is just combined; be careful not to over-mix.

Spread Mixture: Pour the batter into the greased baking dish, spreading it evenly across the bottom.

Prepare Fudge Layer: In a separate bowl, combine the brown sugar and the 1/3 cup of cocoa powder. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the batter in the baking dish.

Add Water: Carefully pour the hot water over the top of everything in the dish. Do not stir; it will create a fudgy sauce while baking.

Bake: Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for about 40-45 minutes, or until the cake is set on top and a toothpick inserted into the cake portion comes out clean, but the fudge sauce underneath remains gooey.

Serve: Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Serve warm, preferably topped with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
