Ingredients

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 cup granulated sugar

1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

2 teaspoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup milk

1/2 cup vegetable oil

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 cup packed light brown sugar

1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (for sauce)

2 cups boiling water

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch square baking dish or similar size casserole dish.

Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, 1/2 cup of cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt until well combined.

Combine Wet Ingredients: Add in the milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. Stir until the mixture is smooth and no lumps remain.

Pour into Dish: Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish, spreading it evenly.

Prepare the Topping: In a separate bowl, mix the brown sugar and the remaining 1/2 cup of cocoa powder together. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the batter in the baking dish.

Add Water: Carefully pour the boiling water over the entire surface of the batter. Do not stir; it will form its own sauce as it bakes!

Bake: Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 30-35 minutes, until the cake is set and the top is firm, while the bottom remains moist and fudgy.

Serve: Allow the cake to cool slightly, then serve warm. It’s perfect on its own or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, which will melt into the warm fudge sauce.
