Ingredients

1 loaf of brioche or challah bread, sliced into 1-inch thick pieces (about 12 slices)

6 large eggs

1 cup whole milk

1 cup heavy cream

1/2 cup maple syrup

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)

Pinch of salt

1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional, for topping)

Powdered sugar (for dusting)

Fresh berries (for serving)

Instructions

Prep the Dish: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.

Layer the Bread: Arrange the bread slices in a single layer in the prepared baking dish. You can slightly overlap them if necessary.

Make the Custard Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, maple syrup, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg (if using), and salt until well combined.

Pour and Soak: Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread slices, making sure all pieces are saturated. If needed, gently press down the bread with a spatula to ensure the egg mixture seeps in. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and let it soak in the fridge for at least 30 minutes or overnight for best results.

Bake the French Toast: Remove the baking dish from the fridge, uncover, and sprinkle the chopped pecans or walnuts on top (if using). Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the custard is set. You can check doneness by inserting a knife into the center; it should come out clean.

Serve: Let the baked French toast cool for a few minutes before slicing. Dust with powdered sugar and serve warm with fresh berries and additional maple syrup if desired.
