Ingredients

1 cup long-grain rice (like Basmati or Jasmine)

2 cups water or broth (vegetable or chicken for added flavor)

1 tablespoon unsalted butter or olive oil

1 teaspoon salt

Optional: 1 bay leaf or a few sprigs of fresh herbs (like thyme or cilantro) for extra aroma

Instructions

Rinse the Rice:

    - Place the rice in a fine mesh sieve or bowl and rinse under cold water. Use your fingers to agitate the rice, allowing the starch to wash off. Rinse until the water runs mostly clear, about 2-3 times. This step is crucial for preventing sticky rice.

      Drain and Soak:

        - After rinsing, let the rice drain for about 10-15 minutes. For an even fluffier texture, soak the rice in fresh water for at least 30 minutes prior to cooking, then drain again.

          Boil Water or Broth:

            - In a medium saucepan, bring the water or broth to a rolling boil. Add the butter or oil, salt, and optional bay leaf or herbs if using.

              Add Rice:

                - Carefully add the drained rice to the boiling liquid. Stir gently to ensure even distribution.

                  Simmer and Cover:

                    - Allow the mixture to return to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Cover the saucepan tightly with a lid. It's essential to keep the steam in, so resist the temptation to peek!

                      Cook:

                        - Let the rice cook undisturbed for 15-20 minutes. If using Basmati, aim for 15 minutes; for Jasmine, around 20 minutes may be more appropriate.

                          Remove from Heat:

                            - After the cooking time, turn off the heat and let the rice sit covered for an additional 10 minutes. This resting phase allows any remaining moisture to redistribute.

                              Fluff the Rice:

                                - Remove the lid, and using a fork, gently fluff the rice by lifting it rather than stirring, which can break the grains. This helps to separate them for that perfect fluffy texture.

                                  Serve:

                                    - Garnish with fresh herbs if desired, and serve warm as a side dish or as a base for your favorite protein and vegetables.
