Ingredients

1 pound ziti pasta

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 medium onion, diced

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 pound ground beef (or Italian sausage)

1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes

2 cups heavy cream

1 teaspoon dried basil

1 teaspoon dried oregano

½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for spice)

Salt and pepper, to taste

3 cups ricotta cheese

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

1 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Fresh basil, for garnish

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Cook the Pasta: In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Cook the ziti according to package instructions until al dente, then drain and set aside.

Sauté the Aromatics: In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion and sauté for about 3-4 minutes until translucent. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute.

Brown the Meat: Add the ground beef (or sausage) to the skillet. Cook until browned and cooked through, breaking it apart as it cooks. Drain excess fat if necessary.

Add Tomatoes: Stir in the crushed tomatoes, heavy cream, dried basil, oregano, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper. Bring the sauce to a simmer and let it cook for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Prepare the Cheesy Filling: In a mixing bowl, combine ricotta cheese, one cup of mozzarella, and half a cup of Parmesan cheese. Mix until well blended.

Combine Pasta and Sauce: In a large mixing bowl, stir the cooked ziti into the meat sauce until well coated.

Layer the Ziti: In a large baking dish (9x13 inches works well), spread half of the ziti mixture on the bottom. Spoon dollops of the ricotta mixture over the top. Add the remaining ziti mixture on top of the ricotta.

Top with Cheese: Sprinkle the remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses evenly over the top of the ziti.

Bake: Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil (to prevent burning) and bake for 20 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, until the cheese is bubbly and golden.

Garnish and Serve: Remove from the oven and let it sit for about 5 minutes. Garnish with fresh basil before serving.
