Teen’s Selfless Act: Selling Beloved Guitar to Help Classmate in Need

Teen’s Selfless Act: Selling Beloved Guitar to Help Classmate in Need

My 13-year-old son sold his beloved guitar to buy a new wheelchair for a girl in his class. I thought it was an extraordinary act of kindness. But at seven the following morning, two police officers appeared at our door. What they told me about the previous day's events left me completely unprepared.

My son Julian had secretly sold his favorite electric guitar to help a classmate whose wheelchair was falling apart.

I was still processing what he'd done when two officers knocked on our front door.

“Mrs. Vance, we need to speak with you about Julian.”

I instinctively reached for my son's hand.

“Has he done something wrong?”

One officer glanced toward him.

“There's something about yesterday that you haven't been told.”

Suddenly, I wondered whether selling his guitar was only part of the story.

Julian had treasured his custom Fender Stratocaster ever since his father and I gave it to him for his birthday.

We'd saved for months to afford it.

He played almost every day, sometimes repeating the same melody until every note sounded perfect.

So when I entered his bedroom carrying fresh laundry and noticed the empty guitar stand, I became concerned.

After school, I questioned him.

“Julian, where's your guitar?”

I nearly dropped the laundry.

“You sold your Fender? Why?”

“Because Maya needed another wheelchair.”

Maya was a sweet girl in his eighth-grade class who had used a wheelchair for several years.

Julian explained that hers was badly worn out.

The wheels frequently jammed, the seat was damaged, and moving between classrooms had become increasingly difficult.

“Last week, she almost missed lunch because the wheels kept getting stuck,” he told me.

Some classmates even laughed at the sounds her chair made.

“She pretends it doesn't bother her,” Julian said. “But I know it does.”

“Can't her parents replace it?”

“They've got so many medical bills. They can't afford the kind she needs.”

I looked toward the empty guitar stand.

“So you decided to sell your guitar?”

“Somebody had to help her.”

“Why didn't you tell me first?”

His eyes filled with tears.

“I thought you'd suggest collecting donations, but Maya needed help immediately. I'm sorry, Mom.”

I wrapped my arms around him.

Part of me wished he'd spoken to me before giving away something so valuable.

But I couldn't ignore the kindness behind his decision.

“I'm proud that you wanted to help,” I said. “But next time, we'll figure something out together.”

Then I asked whether selling the guitar had provided enough money.

“Not all of it,” he admitted.

He opened his drawer and showed me the container where he'd kept his savings.

There was nothing left inside.

“I used all my birthday money.”

“And I sold my PlayStation with the games.”

The wheelchair had cost $1,400.

To pay for it, my thirteen-year-old had sacrificed his favorite guitar, his entire savings, and his gaming console.

“Julian, why would you give up so much?”

His answer brought tears to my eyes.

“Someday I can get another guitar. But Maya needs a wheelchair that works today.”

Later that evening, he told me he'd already purchased the chair and scheduled its delivery.

He wanted Maya and her family to be surprised.

I went to bed feeling proud of the boy I was raising.

I assumed nothing else that week could surprise me more.

At exactly seven the next morning, someone knocked firmly on our door.

Two uniformed police officers stood outside beside a patrol car.

“Sarah Vance?” the taller officer asked.

“I'm Officer Daniels, and this is Officer Cooper. We'd like a moment with you and your son.”

My stomach tightened.

Julian appeared in the hallway.

What happened just seconds later left everyone in the room completely speechless… (Continue to Part 2 →)
